Okay, can’t remember if King’s Quest actually ran from a batch file or a boot up disk, but it’s not the point here… you can substitute it with any other game that you remember. Like Burgertime or Spy Hunter…

Ah, remembering the good old days of MS-DOS and the almighty dos prompt and cursor. Remember Lode Runner?!

Truth. Beauty. Freedom. Love.

Nope, it’s not the ‘just values’ of Al-Rajhi bank as promoted by “I’m Kevin Lim, Branch Manager of…”

It’s the four Bohemian ideals glorified in Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 musical, Moulin Rouge! It’s one of favourite recent movies… I have always been a fan of both Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, so this was a must watch for me. It’s tacky and over the top in props and storyline, but the music and acting by the two stars were top-notch.

I absolutely love the song ‘Come What May’ from the movie… it’s here many thanks to YouTube.

My favourite scene was when Satine, played by Kidman breaks down crying, screaming at Harold Zidler, the owner of Moulin Rouge:

I don’t need you anymore! All my life you made believe I was only worth what someone would pay for me! But Christian loves me. He loves me! He loves me, Harold. And that is worth everything! We’re going away from you, away from the Duke, AWAY FROM THE MOULIN ROUGE!. Goodbye Harold!

The movie ends in a bittersweet tragedy, with the words “the greatest thing you will ever learn, is just to love, and be loved in return…”

Where’s my DVD of Moulin Rouge?

Thoughts After the Wedding Dinner

Published by simon on November 10, 2007

I just came back from a small wedding dinner, two friends from way back got married. I haven’t seen the two of them for many years now, although i was pretty close to the guy before he went outstation to work.

The thing about attending wedding dinners is that it always makes you think.

I for one, am thankful that i am married, and very happily married. When i was a kid growing up, i always had this niggling feeling i’d never meet my life partner and get married (you’d have to have met me back then to understand why…) but in all God’s grace, here I am now.

These days, whenever i see old folks toting their small grandkids out for breakfast while their children are out working, i start thinking about my two kids’ future… thinking about how one day they’ll get married and have kids of their own. Yeah i know, it’ll be more than 20 years away, but I suppose parents can never get away from these things.

I always that my two children will one day meet their soulmates and bear beautiful children of their own, and experience all that goes with it. Just like i did.

When that day comes, i can ANYTIME take the grandkids out with me while i go eat unhealthy fatty fried breakfast while my kids are out to work…

Four Days in Phuket

Published by simon on November 5, 2007

Took a short 4-day trip to the island of Phuket last week for work-and-holiday.

It was a great trip, with all food and lodging paid for, and with generous spending money from the management. We stayed along the Patong Beach, the most happening place on the island (in more ways than one…!)

Phuket is quite a large island, about the size of Singapore, seen below here approaching from air.

As with everywhere in Thailand, everyone is friendly and polite (well, mostly). Seen here is the welcoming committee at the Phuket Cultural Centre, waiting for the next load of tourists… They didn’t see me taking the photo. I take it it’s a tiring job.

taking a rest

Phuket has many attractions other than the beaches and island dive spots, and one of them is this Wat Chalong, the Golden temple. It houses one of the Buddha relics, a small piece of collarbone. Our tour guide said that common saying on the island was that “if you have not seen the golden temple, you have not been to Phuket.”

On to the beach.

There are lots of stalls and Western restaurants facing the beach strip, and the day i arrived was the first day of the Phuket Carnival, signalling the first day of the tourist peak season. Caught these two Adidas girls walking. At least i *think* they are girls.

walking

Phuket has completely recovered from the tsunami, but according to locals, the number of tourists arriving these days is still only about 70% compared to the pre-tsunami days. But reminders of the catastrohe were still visible everywhere…

But of course Patong Beach is all about the important basics… like shopping…

… fresh seafood…

and spicy tomyam… (we had this for EVERY MEAL).

And also the A-go-go girls… most of them are katoeys, or ladyboys (transvestites)

Sunset on Patong Beach. It was a short visit, i should come back one day soon… to shop some more… Sawadeekap.
