The State of Our Newspapers

Published by simon on March 25, 2008

I’m joining the MSM (mainstream media) boycott.
(For the background to it, you can read it all here)

But beside the fact that they print lies and blatant propaganda, i have another reason to wean off buying it. Our newspapers are basically crap.

Let’s look at NST and the Star. Look, the local news about politics and stuff are not worth reading, besides, both papers tell the same story, different writer. As for the sports pages and international news, they all come from the same syndicated foreign news agencies. Unless you one of the 5 people who actually read local sports news, but let’s face it, the day Astro came on board with their live telecast of EPL and F1 and ATP tennis and endless golf tournaments, final nail went into the coffin of local sports.

So the only way the papers can make an impact is in their lifestyle section and regional pullouts. In the Star, the former is called StarTwo and the latter (in Klang Valley) would be Star Metro (Their NST counterparts are “Totally Shite” and “I Couldn’t Care Less”). Here’s where the Star is miles better than NST, and this is the only portion most young people i know read in the papers. NST is utter shite in this department, i sincerely believe their writers can’t good and entertaining articles even if their lives depended on it. Just look at their comics section and their un-funny local strips. I’m all for supporting local talent, but not if they are so pathetic they insult our intelligence.

And here’s another thing - RM1.50 is bloody expensive for a daily newspaper (Yes, the Star, I’m talking about YOU). Don’t give me the spin about rising paper prices and it still being the cheapest in the world, yadda yadda yadda. Look at the amount of advertising and the obscene rates you charge.

The good thing is that as young people spend more time online reading blogs and social networking websites like facebook, the influence of MSM on them will be less and less. And with that, hopefully so will the advertising dollars also follow suit, and that would make the ultimate difference.

Forget American Idol, Watch ‘Across the Universe’

Published by simon on March 21, 2008

Has anyone been watching American Idol? I have, and it’s been a pretty disappointing season. They keep touting it as ‘the best talent we have so far’ (how do they justify that?) and had two weeks of Beatles’ themed shows.

I can’t believe Paul McCartney would have been anywhere near impressed with the performances, especially this weeks’. Anyway, he’s probably too busy with his divorce problems…

I just watched Across the Universe lately, and if you want to see the Beatles’ music honoured in a dignified way, watch the movie instead.

If you haven’t watched it yet, i won’t divulge any details, but it’s basically a love story set across the turbulent 60’s, partly told in the form of Beatles songs.

The most moving scene for me was when Lucy finds out her fiance is killed in Vietnam, her mother collapses… and the scenes intersperse with a lonely black boy hiding from the brutal police beatings:

When I find myself in times of trouble, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree,
there will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see,
there will be an answer. let it be.

Top Ten Reasons for Shocking Political ‘Tsunami’

Published by simon on March 10, 2008

I find it funny they used the term ‘tsunami’. Tsunamis are natural occurences, without any warning until the preceding few minutes. What happened on Saturday was self-inflicted, and warning signs were there since the last two years. Go figure.

Now, before reading on, you DO know what satire means, right?

Top Ten Reasons for Shocking Political ‘Tsunami’

  • Ruling Party did not forsee the huge swing of vote from their most loyal segment - the DEAD VOTERS.
  • On one hand, from the ruling party, you have slickly produced TV ads that cost millions of dollars but treat us like idiots. On the OTHER hand, the opposition had uber-cool guerilla marketing-style Youtube videos. Which one you think appealed more to the young voters?
  • Selangor voters felt left out - since there was IDR for Johor, ECER for East Coast, NCER for the North, but Selangor folks didn’t get their MWCECBBNTMSCER (Middle West Coast Economic Corridor and Balcony But Not That Multimedia Super Corridor Economic Region).
  • Skyrocketing price of petrol and highway toll deterred phantom and parachute voters from travelling outstation to vote.
  • The whole election tsunami was an elaborate set-up to divert our attention from the pathetic display by Malaysian badminton team in the All-England on RTM2.
  • My bomoh is stronger than YOUR bomoh.
  • My red-paint smearing Ah Long gangsters are more powderful than YOUR red-paint smearing Ah Long gangsters.
  • Election campaign budget of RM9.7billion was too small. Shouldn’t have been so kiamsiap, should have spent at least RM45billion. (dun forget to keep the receipts, ah?)
  • Postal votes from the 200,000 army personnel (all 400,000 of the votes) are only expected to arrive next Tuesday. It’s Pos Malaysia, what did you expect?

There are only nine reasons here, although i said ‘Top Ten’, since, like, I’m a blogger, and bloggers are stupid, unemployed women, goblok, etc, zzz….

Post Election 2008: Dawn of A New Era

Published by simon on March 9, 2008

What a beautiful day it is!

Well, i didn’t really believe it before yesterday, we succeeded. Denied the 2/3 majority. Captured the Pearl of the Orient, 2 Malay heartland states Perak (my wife’s state) and Kedah (TM’s state) and Selangor where i voted.

I used to follow the Tanjung I, II, III campaigns back in the 80’s and 90’s when Kit Siang and Tiger of Jelutong Karpal Singh tried unsuccessfully to capture the state. But Kit Siang managed to defeat the aging Lim Chong Eu in a historic moment.

But i think what happened last night (this morning, more like - we were up until about 4.30am) was really beyond the realistic expectations of the Barisan Rakyat Leaders.

More shocking was Selangor - the richest state in Malaysia fallen to the underdogs. I can only forsee massive changes for all my friends working in the local councils. :)

Too bad my childhood state of Johor and my dad’s Melaka remained strongholds, but the time will come one day. If 10 years ago i told you Selangor would fall, you wouldn’t have believed it, would you? I definitely wouldn’t have, but now i dare to hope.

This elections, the long silent Christian minority have come of the woodwork to campaign quietly for what is perceived as direct attacks on our religious freedom. Each in their own way. Some stepped up to stand for election, some worked behind the scene. But most of us prayed together, and campaigned stealthily through the Net.

In all this, i have one question for our PM (as I know it, he still is the PM) : So, what now, Datuk Seri?

The Time is Now. Vote Wisely.

Published by simon on March 8, 2008

Vote wisely, my friends.

The time is now, to make a stand for our future, for our children’s future. So many of our friends have emigrated for a better life, but for those who choose to stay, or have no other choice, let’s make a difference.

As my good friend Patrick says, We want accountability.

We want to fully exercise our religious freedom. Even after we die.

We are sick of racial discrimination. We are sick of corruption and cover-ups, and the lies of the mainstream media.

One a brighter note, eyeris posted an excellent piece on the election using only movie posters.

I was also delighted to find out my good pal Lilian has put herself in the frontlines of the battle for the hottest state in the election. Wah, hoe liaw ah, auntie!

Firefly: Adventures With the Serenity

Published by simon on March 4, 2008

If there a better reason why i’m been away from blogging, it’s because i’ve found a new distraction.

firefly_02_800x600

Yep, I’m caught up with watching Firefly.

It’s a sci-fi TV series that lasted only one season in the US, but just like so many shortlived series, it has its own cultic following. I’ve always been a fan of the creator Joss Whedon, having never missed an episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer all through through the seven seasons.

Firefly is a space cowboy adventure about the Firefly-class transporter named Serenity and it’s seven crew members, led by their captain Mal Reynolds. The trademarks of Whedon is evident here - ragtag ensemble of quirky characters with mysterious pasts, strong-willed women, and the dark humor.

(taken from Fireflyfans.Net. Now residing on my desktop… :) )

There were only 14 episodes ever made, plus one movie released in cinemas back in 2005, at the end of the TV run. I’m loving every minute of it. This is the opening sequence, with the theme song ‘Ballad of Serenity’:

Regular blogging will return after series ends, or the elections, whichever comes later.

Meanwhile, did anyone catch that new gameshow ‘Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?’ Very disappointing. We already there are a lot of clueless Americans out there, the show goes to great lengths to prove this, even those with college degrees. There are only a few questions asked in an episode, most of the time is spent waiting for the contestant to answer or the host making fun of them.

Give me a REAL quiz show with rapid fire questions like The Weakest Link.
