Has anyone been watching American Idol? I have, and it’s been a pretty disappointing season. They keep touting it as ‘the best talent we have so far’ (how do they justify that?) and had two weeks of Beatles’ themed shows.
I can’t believe Paul McCartney would have been anywhere near impressed with the performances, especially this weeks’. Anyway, he’s probably too busy with his divorce problems…
I just watched Across the Universe lately, and if you want to see the Beatles’ music honoured in a dignified way, watch the movie instead.
If you haven’t watched it yet, i won’t divulge any details, but it’s basically a love story set across the turbulent 60’s, partly told in the form of Beatles songs.
The most moving scene for me was when Lucy finds out her fiance is killed in Vietnam, her mother collapses… and the scenes intersperse with a lonely black boy hiding from the brutal police beatings:
When I find myself in times of trouble, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree,
there will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see,
there will be an answer. let it be.

I totally agree that this year American Idol sucks.

I totally agree..what do they mean that this is the best talent they have had so far? Half of the contestants can’t sing!
And I reckon the movie you mention is a downloaded one which I can one day borrow?

I have the songs but I haven’t seen the movie yet.
The renditions are all spine-tinglingly moving – those songs have never sounded better.
About “Let It Be”, you didn’t mention that it started off acapella and segued into a soulful rendition – just amazing! 🙂

What a sad video… 🙁
What other Beatles songs are there in the movie?
simon
