Top Ten Reasons Why I LOVE Malaysia

Published by simon on August 29, 2007

So fifty years, eh? Yes, I am damn proud to be Malaysian. I don’t have a little flag stuck to my car, but I am still damn proud. Besides, those little plastic sticks are really dangerous when it comes flying off on the highway.

There’s a flood of lists out there about Malaysia, let me make my own. There won’t be 50 in the lists, or you’ll stop reading after the second one. So I’ll stop at ten. After that, you can add your own.

Top Ten Reasons Why I Love Malaysia.

  • I can stop and park my car at the side of the road, and buy great tasting goreng pisang from the guy with the wooden pushcart. Yeah, try doing that in Singapore.
  • All the National Day ads on TV inadvertently feature Malay, Chinese and Indian smiling together. Not just this year. Every year.
  • We have a three-time reigning world champion, born and bred in Malaysian. Although in the rank of popularity, she’s a little below the winner of whichever latest two-bitreality‘ singing contest. Don’t worry, Nicol, you’re number one in my book…
  • If you are late for anything at anytime during the day, there’s one excuse that can be used to get you off the hook - “traffic jam
  • We’re in Malaysia, but we have selipar Jepun, mee Jawa, Bombay toast, Masjid India, Bukit China, Manila card, ayam belanda, mee Siam, sirap Bandung and Colombo Plan.
  • Every single Malay stall in the country has a different interpretation of what Mee Hailam tastes and looks like. I’m even sure anymore it originated from the Chinese.
  • Only in Malaysia, white coffee isn’t white, Black Maria isn’t always black, budaya kuning isn’t yellow and blue films aren’t blue.
  • The ultimate in Malaysian exotic gourmet experience - sour plum sweets.
  • No matter how depressed you are or how pathetic you feel, take one look at our national football team and instantly you’ll feel like a champion in comparison!
  • Malaysians, by and large have a fantastic innate sense of balance on two feet. Just look at the LRT at peak hours.

Selamat Hari Merdeka, folks. Don’t drink and drive.

++++

Also, Celine is looking for this Turkish blue eyes necklace (???). Apparently, it looks like this. Anyone can help? Thanks…!

  3. mott Said,

the fact that you can go out and find food at any time…now, that’s one of the reasons why i love malaysia!

  4. Ponytail Said,

    I add one more…

Malaysia is the land of Durian! Wooohooooooo!!!!

  5. keeyit Said,

If you are late for anything at anytime during the day, there’s one excuse that can be used to get you off the hook - “traffic jam“

  6. consuela Said,

    I agree with mott…
I love Malaysia because of its variety in food, all great tasting and affordable too! I miss nasi lemak, hokkien mee, roti canai, etc…
    *sighs*

  7. Jasraj Sandhu Said,

For at least 5 out of the 10 reasons I can easily point out the fact how we have bastardize these seemingly pleasant reasons into very unpleasant attitudes that day by day seeming the more dominant Malaysian way!

    But I wont.

Instead I just want to point out that some of the most important reasons that should matter are not in the list.

How about our Freedom - and I don’t mean the freedom to stop your car beside a roadside stall?

How about our solidarity as nation of many races & religion?

Day by day we lose more facets of this reasons and yet most Malaysian are not aware of this fact. Sometimes I even wonder if we younger generation of Malaysian tend to forget where our forefathers came from and the hard fought journey they have to endure to achieve their goal of independence.

I leave you with these thoughts.

    Happy Merdeka!

  8. papajoneh Said,

    Thanks Simon for dropping by.
Yes the 1st reason quite good to make us love Malaysia. I love goreng pisang. I have not found a single goreng pisang that i don’t like. :D

  9. Bob K Said,

    Selamat Hari Merdeka :)

Now if someone can write something about why it sucks to be Malaysian just to balance the saccharine sweet stuff that we get everyday.

  10. anjalispeaks Said,

If you are late for anything at anytime during the day, there’s one excuse that can be used to get you off the hook - “traffic jam“

I think the right excuse should be “ON THE WAAAAY” and people will still fall for it. After twenty minutes, you can still use the same excuse…Heh.

Anyway, personally, I dont celebrate Merdeka anymore, coz year after year, I think the freedom fought by our forefathers were all in vain. Coz it’s not us the Chinese and Indian who are benefitting from it, and we’re losing our benefits as the day goes by, from second class citizen to third class now, and in another 50 years, no class at all. My two sen la.

  11. sasha Said,

u just remind me..i so long belum makan pisang goreng…must go get one today!~

  12. makcik tauhu Said,

It shows very well why Malaysia never improves. Everyone is lagging, waiting, snaking, excusing and also eating all day long. Hit 2020 pun at the same old world with same old attitude. Mana mau maju? ;)

    Makcik jual tauhu je…

  13. rafiq Said,

the mee hailam part..i so agree!! hahaha. even i am confused to which hailam is the original one
