How I Chose My Domain Name

Okay, my blog migration is finally completed, for the time being. At most the next few weeks I will be harassing my fellow bloggers to update their links (shouldn’t take long, there aren’t many!)

One reader asked me why I chose simon talks as the my blog name. Actually, I not those who are overly concerned with names in general, what matters more is your content. Just as in real life, I wouldn’t care if your name is Hunter Hearst Helmsley Chua, I’m more interested in your personality and character.

But I did consult the Internet and one or two friends on the name selection. Here are some rejected names, almost-made-it names and non-starters:

Simon.com, simon.net & simon.org – taken, taken and taken. Who was I kidding?! Too bad, I’d love to a single name domain like suanie.net and minishorts.net.

simonX.com – you know, like X-men or X-factor. But unfortunately, taken. And I didn’t like the hyphenated simon-X.com.

Simple Simon and Simon says – My friend suggested them. Like hell I’m gonna choose those. I HATE cliché names like that. Anyway, you’ll never reach the top of the google search with those.

Simon speaks – I REALLY liked this one, but it was a non-starter right from the beginning. Like I told my friend, if I chose that one, anjali* would kill me!

Simonblogs – in keeping with the theme of “simon-does-something”, this was the next in line. However there were a few established blogs in the US and the UK with the same title, but not using the domain as they were using free hostings (e.g. blogspot, blogsome).

Simonsaurus – this one so cool! But everyone is gonna get the spelling wrong, so it was scratched.

simonoids or supersimon – my friend called them Ah-Beng names, and I agree.

Simonsimon.com – considered, but never made it to the finals.

Simon-the-dark-Lord-of-the-Sith-and-fifth-Metallica-member.com – My wife said no. Damn!

Simonwashere.com – it was between this or simontalks. But you who who won the toss up.

Anyway the whole process took half a day. Simon-is-crap.com almost made the list.
