MacGyver

Published by simon on October 30, 2007

If you called me out on Tuesday nights some time in the 80’s when I was in secondary school, I’d probably have to say ‘no’ on the account of a TV show – MacGyver. Everyone of my friends watched that show – guys and girls. It was so popular that anyone who is good at fixing stuff with junk is still called ‘MacGyver’ even today.

For the young punks, the show starred Richard Dean Anderson (who later starred in StarGate SG-1) who works for an ambiguous organization called the Phoenix Foundation doing non-profit work. He’s the regular only star of the show, the only other cast member to appear on and off is his boss Pete (Dana Elcar). Most of the time he’s called on to carry out simple missions that get complicated like stop a smuggling ring, retrieve a precious item from the jungle, rescue a politician’s kidnapped daughter, etc.

Every episode had our intrepid hero using his scientific knowledge, and everyday objects to build something in the nick of time – like buiding a rocket launcher using garden products, building a bomb to blow down a down using stationery, saving a person from hear-attack with liquid from a copier machine, etc (not exactly, but something like that la). This part was usually the highlight of the show, and while most of the time, the scientific reality of it was believeable, some of the episodes were a little far-fetch even to someone with a college degree. But of course to a 10-year old kid like me it was like awesome, man… Two items he always carried with him was his trusty Swiss Army knife and duct tape. Typical guy la.

There are a few things that I remember about MacGyver:

  • He believed in non-violence, and never killed anyone. He only mostly damaged property with his inventions. He was the 80’s environmental warrior – some of his tasks dealt with this. He also drove a low mileage open top jeep. Mainly to drive the fangirls wild with his wind-blown hair.
  • Every other episode involved with a beautiful girl, either working with him or him rescuing her. They’d always be like, infatuated with him, but he’d be cool about it… i wonder why… (come to think of it…)
  • Other than Mac and his boss, a few other regular guest-stars appeared a few times each season. One of them was Jack Dalton, his seedy friend that is always on some scheme to get rich but getting both of them in trouble. The other was Murdoc, Mac’s nemesis that always seemed to get away.
  • The technical aspect of the show started to deteriorate in later seasons, and sometimes even repeated. Probably because the writers started to run out of ideas.
  • Mac’s first name was never given, until the last season when it was revealed to be ‘Angus’.

A check with Wikipedia showed that the show ran for 7 seasons, although i don’t remember following the last few seasons closely. But it was a great show during its peak… also encouraged lots of kids to take apart their parent’s washing machine or telephone ‘to be like MacGyver’…!

How To Pass The Time At The Office Until 5pm

Published by simon on October 25, 2007

Pat asked why i don’t do lists anymore. Well, subpoena from David Letterman notwithstanding, here’s one.

If you are bored at the office with nothing to do, there are a lot of things you can do to pass the time until the all-important 5.00pm when you can scoot off. If you have internet without company firewall, all the better. Don’t have Internet access, change your job. No, I’m kidding, there are also ways to pass the time, but few of them are legal.

Armed with a PC and broadband (forget about dial-up) here’s some ideas:

  • Go on Facebook and throw sheep at all your friends. Or play Scrabulous.
  • Play Desktop Tower Defence. And tell me how to defeat the ‘Hard’ level. Make sure you turn the sound off in the office.
  • Change your blog template (for WP users, try here). Don’t worry, we all know you update your blog (or blogs) at work already.
  • Trap the cat. Trust me, it’s not as difficult as it looks.
  • Search for aliens. No, real aliens out there.
  • Get out of the room. (yeah, I know it’s old)
  • Read my archives. It will be life-changing.
  • Learn GIMP. It’s easy to learn and an excellent skill to have, trust me. Besides, it’s free.
  • Since googlewar is no longer around, try Googlefight.
  • Or try Googlewhacking… it’s fun. Managed to get a few some years back.
  • Try to beat Venus Williams with Kimiko Date
  • Or laugh at something you shouldn’t…

Okay that should carry you to 4.30pm easily. Tomorrow we try something else. Fridays pass faster…

Filler Thoughts While I am Sick

Published by simon on October 22, 2007

Felt a bit sick yesterday, today was REALLY sick with the flu. Not helping that i had to be in air-conditioned office all day.

Must be all that good food i had last Saturday. Kevin and 2ann had their baby’s full moon party and the food was AWESOME, man.

All the way to Subang i was thinking, “the food better be good, man… the food better be good, man…” and thank goodness it was. There was mutton curry, fried chicken, home made lor bak, nasi kunyit…

No wonder I’m sick today. But worth it…

So one day, after the sales of Harry Potter and the Circus Finally Comes to And End (also known as Book 7) have slowed down, since all those hardcore fans have already bought all THREE versions of the book, J.K.Rowling starts thinking, Gee, how do generate more buzz? Oooh, i know, i know, Dumbledore is GAY! That’ll appeal to a marketable demographic!

God. I can now only see all those previous books in a NEW light, wands being phallic symbols and all.

What next? Snape turns out to be a hero? No, wait, that’s already happened…

I heard Kota Damansara was flooded last Saturday, with the whole commercial area under water. Was anyone there? I bet all those shoppers would have been trapped.

Kapchai Days

Published by simon on October 20, 2007

Back in college i used to own a kapchai. It was a Honda RC80, and my friends call it an old uncle motorbike.

Surely a far cry from the modified bikes mat rempits and mat motors ride these days, but it was enough for me.

Even back in those days, my bike wasvery close to the BOTTOM of the motorbike hierachy in Malaysia, only slightly above the old green vespas that old uncles rode, and the guys who had to make do with their father’s ancient 70cc motorbikes. There were also this Honda Passola that aunties used to go to the pasar pagi to buy sayur. It’s like a bicycle with a fish tank motor.

One step above mine were guys with their new 100 or 110cc bikes, with clutch (although most of them never used it). Chinese guys usually went with Honda and Suzuki, Malay guys more with Yamaha. No idea why.

For those Malay guys with better scholarship money, it was Yamaha RX-Z. First thing they did was remove the hodoh looking visor at the front. If you didn’t take it out, you spend most of the time hearing the line, ‘eh, bukak lah visor hodoh tu.

A step up from the legendary RX-Z was Kawasaki Ninja, but it was mostly owned by rich Chinese guys whose ‘father is businessman, lah’. Some Malay guys also preferred the Honda Raider or Panther, but it was phased out quite early. My friends refered to the Raider as ‘koon choy (coffin) motor’ because the rear light looked like one. Not a good omen if you are doing 150mph on the highway.

My kapchai was severly underpowered, and the handbrake and horn never worked properly no matter how many time i fixed it. By the time i graduated and bought my first car, it was it pretty bad shape.

Last year, my dad sold off my old kapchai for RM600, pity the poor guy who bought it…

Yuk Kee Coffeeshop, KL Pavilion and The Gardens Mid Valley

Published by simon on October 16, 2007

I’m back from my Ipoh trip.

I’m still on two days annual leave, and since it is my wedding anniversary today, we went on a big day out. And what do we do on big days out?

WE WENT SHOPPING!

But first stop, we went for breakfast. We went to try this Hainanese coffeeshop we’ve been dying to try for some time - Yuk Kee Coffeeshop on Campbell Street (called Jalan Dang Wangi these days). They serve lots excellent Hainanese / colonial dishes, including local dishes.

We tried the roti bakar, pork chop and roti babi (with apologies to my Muslim friends). The latter is their signature dish, was rather too rich for me. It’s actually Chinese sausages (lap cheong) with some stringy vegetables stuffings wrapped with a thin bread and the whole thing is french toasted. Quite filling, and it costs RM7.

The pork chop was rather good, reminded me of my grand-dad’s cooking. He was also a Hainanese cook for the British during the pre-Independence.

Then we headed for KL Pavilion nearby.

It’s not as small as a lot people make it out to be, they make use of lots open spaces which the trend with shopping malls like 1-Utama and the Curve. Quite a number of shops were still not opened yet, and it was obvious they haven’t really finished the construction completely yet - lots of workers walking around patching ceilings and painting. But there was a lot shoppers, too.

Most of the shops were couture fashion outlets, but two interesting outlets were The Loaf and J.Co. The Loaf is that Japanese bakery partly own by Tun Mahathir. We tried some, four pieces of pastries cost us RM15. Most expensive snack i’ve had in a long time. Tastes okay only la. If you can, check out the logo. I could have sworn that’s TM on it.

J.Co is a donut shop from Indonesia featured in the Star recently. The logo and shop looks strangely like Big Apple in The Curve and 1-Utama. We didn’t try them, but they looked really SMALL and costs slightly more than Big Apple. But the line of customers was really long, man.

Pavilion has quite a few fine dining restaurants, but mostly it is for expensive ladies’ clothes.

In just over 2 hours of shopping, we were done. Parking costs a bomb, though. Okay next - the Gardens at Mid Valley.

DSC03925

Just like Pavilion, it was just opened, and not really entirely completed, but most of the shops here were already opened. It’s more varied that the former, but a lot of the same couture shops are also found here, like TopShop, DKNY, etc. But the Gardens has a great concept, and they obvious spend a lot of money on the plants and couches and architecture (including the giant screens at the top) unlike the bland Pavilion.

There are less food outlets here, but a great place for family shopping.

Below: that’s my daughter fooling around on one of the giant couches on the ground floor.

I’m still on leave tomorrow. What am to do? We’re going to eat steamed fish head at Chan Sow Lin and followed by…

… MORE SHOPPING!

Or as i prefer to call it, ‘fueling the economy’.

Hitting The Road Again

Published by simon on October 12, 2007

Tomorrow morning we’re going back to Ipoh again to my in-laws for the long weekend. Kevin is hitching a ride with us, so we’ll get to see 2ann when we get there.

But more importantly, I’ve got my itinery all planned out.

Breakfast at Foh San - probably have to fight off 200 waiting families to get a table.

Salted Chicken Rice for Lunch - As if i don’t eat enough unhealthy food. What the heck, my health screening isn’t for a few more months.

Supper at Lou Wong Taugeh Chicken - the stuff here is addictive, man. Like REAL addictive.

Dinner is always at home, this weekend we’re having steamboat.

In between is sleeping to recover from all that exhausting eating.

I’ve brought back 2ann’s copy of ‘War And Peace’ read. I’m like at page 160 …. out of 1500 pages. Yes you read it right. It’s so thick i can injure someone if i threw it.

My Very First Post

Published by simon on October 12, 2007

You know how it’s cool to be environmentally friendly and recycle, right?

Like how Jay Leno recycles his jokes (ad nauseam, might i add), so we bloggers are going green and recycling… our first posts.

This is from Lilian… you KNOW you are getting on with age when people always refer to you as ‘old blog buddies’… as if the expanding waistline isn’t bad enough… :(

Anyway, this was quite fun. Let me take you back awhile… it was early 2005, almost 3 years ago, when i was sitting around in the office, new on the job, without nothing much to do… (come to think of it, nothing much has changed).

But i had a spanking new HP notebook (cost the company RM7000) and unlimited broadband access. No, REAL broadband, not Screamyx.

After one day, i had started a yahoo homepage with Amazon ads. It was spectacularly pathetic.

After a few more days, i stumbled upon a few interesting blogs and decided to start one of my own, using Blogspot (Yes, the ‘old bloggers’ will remember which one that was…)

At first, i envisioned my blog to be a personal one mainly for my very close friends. But as most of you know, things turn out a lot different since then. Anyway, here was the innocent first post.

AT LONG LAST!!

Ah, well. Finally got my own blog!!

What made me finally do it? I guess its been a long time coming, it just needed a little effort to choose the blog page and set it. All 5 minutes of it. And 3 minutes of it was spent choosing a blog page name…

I was just on a short holiday at the Swiss Garden at Damai Laut, when i was reading Forbes magazine which said that blogging will become the biggest tech trend in 2005. I think it already is. Well, here I go jumping on the bandwagon.

Some introductions, first. I’m happily married to the most beautiful woman on earth, have two girls and work in the property line in the centre of KL, Malaysia. And when I mean centre, its really the centre! Well actually, 200 meters off centre, its opposite KLCC.

Anyway I hope to hear any comments or postings, drop me a line!

How time flies.

My Desktop

Published by simon on October 7, 2007

Consuela tagged me all the way from Hawaii on this one. We are supposed to post a snapshot of how our desktop looks like, no cheating (but apparently some photoshopping is *allowed*. Whew)

Let me just say that MY WIFE set the desktop background not me.

Nice family pic. Sorry about the censored bit, i’m too lazy to go and photoshop it properly… But i have written approval from Mickey and Minnie to show their faces here on my website. If i got time i’ll pixelate the pics properly. Not likely to happen tho.

Better than the blue Windows default background-lah. Taken from out trip to HK Disneyland.

That’s HK as in ‘Hong Kong’, not ‘ham-ka’

Let me tag some people.
2ann - got time in between breastfeeding or not?
ponytales - this one sure got time one. :)
eyeris - stop moping about Liverpool and show me your desktop la.
mott - got time in between morning sickness or not? :)
Gallivanter - i bet it’s pictures of some rock band…

Why I Want To Eat At Friday’s

Published by simon on October 5, 2007

I’ll give you a very good reason.

Have you tasted their AWESOME mocha mud pie?

Have you?!

If you haven’t, this is what you have been missing.

mudpie

Plus, there are buffalo wings, chicken fajitas, the various delectable Jack Daniel’s-infused dishes… but far and away, I’m dreaming of the mocha mud pie… Friday’s is always a time of good food and great fun with friends and family, with their warm ambience and great staff. My children love the kid’s meals, plus the large portions means there’s always plenty to share all round.

Well, as The Cure puts it so eloquently:

“Friday, I’m in Love.”
