“Like That Also Can Ah?!!”

Studio Ghibli!

Published by simon on August 20, 2007

Yesterday i was at IKEA/Ikano, doing some window shopping. i was at the first floor and saw that there some music exhibition at the ground floor concourse area, so i went down. Actually my kid was attracted to the huge promo poster for High School Musical 2, damn that thing is going to be so blardy popular in a few weeks’ time…

Anyway i was pleasantly surprised to find some cool DVDs and music CDs for sale.

This is what i bought.

Woo-hoo! Studio Ghibli! Hayao Miyazaki!

14 movies on 5 DVDs for RM35.90. I know i can get it free, but this comes with full features like multiple languages and subtitles. I actually have some of them, but since it only works out to be about RM2.50 per movie, i get the boxset anyway.

For the uninitiated, the movies above are classic Japanese anime by the legendary director Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli. I first discovered Miyazaki through Spirited Away, and slowly started to explore his ealrier works way back to the mid eighties.

You read more about the man and his works here and here.

And so that was my bit for the whole ‘buy original’ anime scene…

  1. Ann Said,

I would have walked pass this kinda stuff with NO thought in the world of buying it!

Lack of exposure, lack of interest in cartoons….what governs the pre-occupations of the mind?

Monday morning, unwired brain, philosophical talk!

  2. Pat Said,

Simon - watch Only Yesterday first! Its my favourite amongst all, very sweet and touching.

Ann - watch one and let it change your mind :) These are not your Saturday morning cartoons or even the ones you get to see on Astro’s anime channel, these are actually cartoons with adult themes and stories. Grave of the Fireflies was known as one of the greatest anti-war movies ever. How many non-cartoon movies can even lay claim to that?

  3. simon Said,

hmmm, i thot of starting with totoro first tonight, since it is chronologically the first…

  4. consuela Said,

wow…that’s a real great bargain for all of his movies! Spirited Away still remains my favorite :)
And gosh…I have many more to watch as I’ve only seen Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle & Kiki’s Delivery Service.

Let me know how the rest are after you’ve watched them all :)

  5. Ponytail Said,

I watched Laputa and Howl’s moving castle, borrowed from youngest sis-in-law :)
Simon and Pat, never knew u guys are actually into this also…kekeke

  6. CLF Said,

    All those are masterpieces!!

My fav would be Spirited Away & Laputa. Also, Grave of Fireflies is a very touching one, very sad but true story.

Enjoy those animes if ur com ever break down again. :P

P/S: Why Spirited Away isnt included in the collection? Hmm….

  7. simon Said,

    consuela - wow, i’m surprised! you’re a fan too!

ponytail - you MUST watch nausicaa. it’s fantastic.

CLF - probably bcoz spirited away is still new and they can make money selling it as a separate DVD. i’d like to own it on dvd too, since i only have vcd.

  8. Infectioner Said,

I bought Masked Rider 555 DVD at there.. it costs me around RM50 but it’s 1/3 of the normal price XD

  9. Edrei Said,

My favourites are Mononoke Hime (which was my first Studio Gibli film I watched) and Laputa.

I recently watched Studio Gibli’s newest film - Tales From Earthsea, though that isn’t as great as the other movies because it’s directed by Goro Miyazaki, his son. It doesn’t have many of the trademarked characters but it’s still nice to watch.

  10. simon Said,

    infectioner - baja hitam!!!

Edrei - hmm. gotta find that one. if it’s miyazaki, i’ll watch it.

  11. mayne Said,

Hi, where can i get those dvds? do you think the shop is still selling them at ikano? i would love to collect all of the movies as well. thanks.

  12. simon Said,

you can try the ikano at popular. but i don’t think it’ll be at half price anymore.

  13. mayne Said,
