Exceeded Bandwidth: I’m Moving to Flickr

Published by simon on January 16, 2006

For the past few days, I’ve exceeded the bandwidth for my photo hosting site, Photobucket. That explains why you’re seeing these little blue striped icons in place of my photos.

Yeah, I know, most bloggers would know that Flickr would have been the better choice, but I had already signed up for Photobucket a long time ago. A few bloggers recommended me to switch to Flickr at the very beginning. Well, figured that since I had already signed up, and that it was free, I thought I’d use up my Photobucket space first (50Mb), then move on to Flickr.

Unfortunately, the problem wasn’t with the 50Mb space limitations, it was the monthly bandwidth limit of 2.5Gb. I duly received a few warning e-mails notifying me that my account was reaching it bandwidth limit, and that I should upgrade to the premium package (of course, that one ain’t free lah!), etc.

Right, first my webhosting account, now this.

Well, when you first start out blogging and posting pic, you’ll tell yourself that “Oh, I don’t really post that many pics” or “my site doesn’t have that many visitors, 2,5Gb is plenty for me“. One thing for sure, the longer you blog, sooner or later you will generate enough traffic viewing the pics.

Anyway, I still don’t post many pics as some other bloggers, regular readers can attest to that.

So I’m switching to Flickr. Apparently they give unlimited bandwidth and 20Mb of disk space (I’m not too sure, gotta check the details), so it’ll be some time until I fill it up. Mean time I got to transfer some of the older pics to Flickr to avoid seeing that ‘Bandwidth Exceeded’ icon again…

lilian - i use not even 5% of space, but bandwidth exceeded already… i can’t imagine if i post lots of pics!

  8. photobucketmike Said,

I was sorry to hear about your issues, please contact me and let’s see if all of your bandwidth is being consumed by people hotlinking to you. I upgraded your account to a premium level (to help you out) which has unmetered bandwidth.

I like your blog and would hate to see its images move away from photobucket.

  9. lilian Said,

Oh wow, Simon! Kung Hei Fatt Choy!

  10. Jee Said,

Aiyo got Photobucket representative here leh.. Simon is VIP now lol

  11. simon Said,

photobucketmike - thanks you reply here, mike. it’s goes a long way to show photobucket’s initiative to provide good service to bloggers by personal commenting here. :) Can’t say the same for most of the others i have dealt with. keep up the good work, guys. on another note, i’d love to upgrade to a premium account, but i’ve dead broke, spending money i don’t have is out of the question…

lilian - Kiong hee fat choy to you, too!

jee - very good of them, eh?

  12. ShaolinTiger Said,

Flickr is 20mb of upload bandwidth per month, unlimited storage and download bandwidth, plus it has a nice social tagging system.

  13. Adam Said,

As they say, “don’t put all your pototoes in one basket” or something like that. I am using Flickr, Textamerica, Blogger as well as Photobucket all at the same time. I distribute the pics thus making sure that I don’t have any space or bandwidth problem.

  14. suanie Said,

and if you decide to go pro, it’s RM95 a year for unlimited sets (where you can group certain photos together, ie Christmas Party 2005). And there are other neat stuff too, like 2GB monthly upload limit, unlimited storage (free version allows you to view your own photos up to 200 photos) and the quality of uploaded images will not be so bad. With the free version, they tone down the quality a little. For personal use it’s all right lah. A lot of pro photographers using Flickr though; the community is nice and there are always a lot of really beautiful photos to discover.

So, if you are not using Flickr, what are you waiting for? ;)

  15. suanie Said,

Just make sure that you do not upload huge ass photos to Flickr — if you only need it to be 500px, why upload the original at 1200px? It will only make your upload bandwidth go faster. Even at the peak of my photo upload happy months, I never once exceeded the upload bandwidth limit.

  16. simon Said,

shaolintiger - ooh, social tagging should come in handy. thanks for the tip.

adam - ok. i actually also use another host, but mostly photobucket.

suanie - i’ve signed up for flickr, thanks for the tip… :)

  17. mahagurusia Said,

Wah, syiok syiok! Good to see that bloggers (have a tad of power and) are appreciated. :)

  18. kenny lee Said,

simon, I dun think many will use my trick as blogger can merely provide you a space to put pic, no other functions liao…
flickr is far superior in terms of features.

  19. kenny lee Said,

forgot to say, create multiple yahoo account to take advantage of flickr free a/c
    *evil grin*

  20. Ken Said,

I use blogger to host my pics… Hiak… It’s not like I have much pics to put up either… :P

  21. simon Said,

mahagurusia - well, i suppose bloggers constitute the largest group of users for photobucket, correct me if i’m wrong…

kenny & ken - actually, i have some personal problems with Blogger.com…

  22. home equity line of credit apply Said,
