“Blue or Pink?”
Published by simon on September 21, 2005Whenever I hear news that someone had just got a baby, I’ll always ask “blue or pink?”
Most people would just go, “Huh?”
Parents, however would get my meaning and would either answer one or the other.
If you STILL don’t get it,
PINK = GIRL (easy to remember. You know that pop singer Pink?)
BLUE = BOY (ditto for that boy band called ‘Blue’)
Actually, the real reason is the colour of blankets and baby swaddling clothes they use in hospital. How this convention came about is a great mystery to me. Like a 2-hour-old baby is going to know what colour he or she is wearing. “Nurse! Nurse! Please, can I get another colour of clothes? Pink doesn’t really go with the ambience of this room…”
I have a great maternity ward story when my kid was born (most of my friends have heard that one…).
But perhaps another day I’ll tell it.

I think I saw white blankets/towel before. Then, is what?
then its the hospital too cheapskate to buy blue or pink linen!
Haha…I was contemplating to blog this too as last week I was holding blue in one hand and pink in the other, trying to decide which one to get (the sex of the baby is supposed to be a surprise, so have not found out from the scan!)
Hmm, I thought you were talking about the Matrix… hehe.
mama22beas - oh, want to have surprise is it…? Is there a bet going on in the office?
totoro - eh matriks is blue or red la!
My girlfriend once faced this dilemma whereby she was preparing an all-blue welcome deco for the baby, inclusive of room color, clothes, blanket, whatever you-name-it in blue only to be shocked silly when the baby turned out to be a girl! Donno’s who’s teapot the gynae saw during the scanning. Heheh.
Best part was have to suddenly seek the in-laws council for a girl’s name!!!
Ok, I wanna hear that great maternity ward story.
Yeah, what James said.
And that maternity ward story better be really “great”…
…Or Else. >:)
sometimes i just buy yellow(presents i mean)so that its unisex. Can be handed down to future siblings irregardless of the gender.
aiyah…go neutral lar, use white.
but green oso got right? then that is wat? an early intro to being a confused boy/girl resulting in becoming a transsexual? OMG…wat a thot!!
OK, that’s it. You are rubbing it in! I only see blue, blue, blue, blue and blue.
this is all the structuralised codes made. Who ever said pink was for girls and blue for boys? Why not the opposite?
See.. think for a minute..=P
why wait for another day to tell the story?
anjali - think about it, during the scan the girl foetus was prolly showing the finger to the doctor…
james - lots of blood. Extremely painful. For my wife, too. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA…
sashi - man, i can’t blog under pressure! *sweats*
fashionasia - “but mom, i don’t want to wear these horrible yellow hand-me-downs from kor-kor! I’ll get beaten up in the playground!”
yvy - green probably means “Sorry we’re out of blue/pink linen, sorry aa?”
lilian - eh, get your sons to wear pink lar. very metrosexual liao…
reta - interesting hypotheses… but the nurses will be confused… especially those male nurses wearing blue.
twinsmom - bcoz very the long story. some more must got mood to tell one…
I know this one guy who is really into pink
weird, man….
maybe nick thinks it’s you ler Simon =P
Nah, I’m more of an electric purple kind of guy…
