Form 5 SPM Physics? Er…

The other a friend asked me if I wanted to help her freelance to write and edit some reference books to be used in schools. Sure, I said, I’m always looking to add to my measly income.

What subject, I asked? I’m not very well-versed in brain surgery and rocket science, I joked.

No lah, she said. Form Five Physics, she said.

I say man. Form Five Physics, ah? Standard 2 English can or not? That one I very good lah.

“See Jane Run.”
“See Dick Run.”
“Run Jane, Run!”

See? That one I very good-lah, Form Five Physics I very difficult to kelentong*. By the way, what was Dick’s intentions to chase Jane, there? Is there some kind of sub-text subliminal message in those innocent primary school textbooks that escaped our young minds?

Anyways, I had to say no. I sucked at SPM Physics (although I had no idea how they gave me a freaking A2 for it). I have scant memories of those halcyon days in the smelly physics lab next to the pond where the Upper Six students drown their rats before dissection for Biology class…

Top Ten Things I Remember Learning From My Form Five Physics
(Please bear in mind SPM Physics would probably be a whole lot different from my time.)

  • Teachers get annoyed if you keep stealing those nice circular ‘kertas turas’ (filter paper?) out of the lab every week.
  • The ‘amali’ (practical) portion of your SPM (‘O’ levels) constitute 10% of your overall score. And if you score 0% by entirely screwing up the practical, you probably won’t stand a chance in hell to get an A1. And if I’m not mistaken, it was 40% objective questions and 50% subjective.
(Sidenote: For us, the Physics ‘amali’ is the first portion of the SPM we took, long before the written exams took place. I didn’t actually screw anything up, but that didn’t stop me from getting an A2.)
  • 9 out of every 10 dry cell battery they have in the lab is flat dead. Everytime we were suppose to do some experiment with the diodes and voltmeters and lightbulb, we had to test like 49 of the batteries to find the few that could still work. No wonder we all screwed up our practical during SPM.
  • And all the time, it was Eveready batteries. Nobody heard of Duracell or Energizer. With the picture of the black cat jumping through some hoop or something like that. Once in awhile, we’d find some strange Japanese branded batteries, probably donated by my teacher after taking out of his TV remote control.
  • Every week, without fail, some moron in my class would leave one of the ‘jam randik’ (timer clocks) running after leaving the lab. And my teacher would have to go and check everyone of them to find the one that is running.
  • Brownian movement – the random movement of smoke particles colliding with air particles. I heard it again on ‘Battle of the Sexes’ on Mix.FM the other day.
  • If you sleep at the back of the lab, the teacher can still see you from the front. Ask Azarin, my classmate. He gets caught every week.
  • You can score A1 in your SPM Physics (or A2, for that matter), but that doesn’t mean you’ll be able to explain why the sky is blue when your kid asks you 12 years later…
  • If you think Form 5 Physics is difficult – wait til you see Form 6 Physics…

*kelentong – I WOULD attempt to explain this word, but I doubt it’ll be as funny as it sounds.

(Sidenote: Does anyone know how to convert a .MKV file to .AVI? I googled it up and found this instruction to use mkvtoolnix and mkvetractgui but it doesn’t to work…)

I took my SPM Physics 2 years ago and guess what else’s different? Your amali we call it PEKA. And our teacher forced us to do it EVERY FREAKING PERIOD. Try using flat eveready batteries to run a pita detik?

  • obeliskdee

PEKA Kimia we called it PEKAK (deaf), Physics as PEKAF, Bio as PEKAB…so silly, I still remember that…haha. And they called those wooden thingy as ‘troli’…wat a name. Kinda miss the good old days though.

  • rijac

brings back memories. in 87 when we did our amali trials… we mixed the chemicals up and everyone in the next session got wierd results for their experiments… LMAO!!!

so mean ah? but damn funny!

  • lilian

Heh, don’t even mention Physics. I got a P8. The only part I like about Physics is to see those iron shavings shape on the magnet. Kutub utara, kutub selatan selalu bertentangan.

Re the conversion, there are trial version but they allow you only few times. I also have the same problem with .MOV format. Louyat would have the problem solved easier.

  • zyrin

I think I got a C5 for my Physics as well. I sucked at Physics. But I liked the gravity ‘amali’, tho. See the wooden trolley go ‘whooosshh!!!!’

I used to steal the kertas turas allll the timeee….

  • Laksa

haiyoh, can’t remember anything about physics already…except for the small little box thingy with springs and wheels attached…still preferred chemistry – loved playing with acid! hehe

  • CLF

Hahahaha….. well I’m F5 now and some of your points are true.
Oh btw, now we dont have practical exam in SPM…. it’s replaced by a paper 3, which is a paperwork for experiments.

ken & obeliskdee – PEKAK? so funny! what does it stand for?

rijac – talking about amali kimia, wah, that one really stressed me out man. it had something to do with plants underwater. i was sweating during the exam!!!

lilian – i need to email you about the mkv file thing.

mama23beas – my Form5 teacher was a really nice guy. When i went to uni, he went with us to do his masters! imagine him going through orientation with us…

s-kay – i also failed my first physics exam. simply because we didn’t memorize the 4 basic formulas of motion. i think i got 35 out of 100!

zyrin – we also used to steal those rolls of pita detik, and send love messages to the girls in our class! so innocent man.

offline geek & inevitable – all my friends tried their best to get out of STPM. At the end of the year, i think the 2 double maths class was reduced to half a class, sharing with bio-maths. so sad.

Laksa – chemistry… We used to play with the bunsen burner! That was super-fun!

IX – i know. I can’t fly bcoz of it.

CLF – so you dun do amali anymore! So lucky! We used to DREAD it. And the teachers dreaded it more than us.

i’m sitting for spm this year, an unforgettable moment last year, when my physics teacher threw away my test paper from the 3rd floor, because i got 20 out of 100 mark for the monthly test….

  • tjh

Swt !! We used Bunsen Burner to barbecue some food ta pao-ed from the canteen… Wakaka
Readers please dont imitate…Bad Impression from teacher…=)

  • yen

i never pass my phys(n +math)test n exam..my spm dis year n i really worry bout it..my phys techr had only 1 year xperinc in teaching phy..i rely dun undrstnd all da lesson she tough..but i go 4 tuition..hope it will work….

  • yen

1 more, actly i didnt phy at all…da reason i took phy is bcoz in shool, my class(f5)is da only clss dat hv p.account subj…

  • nora

i Never PASS my physics since i was form 4, but i was almost passed. I’m gud at counting but bad at understanding da concept.

  • nora

im taking PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY, ADD M3+++ AKAUN AT THE SAME TIME. IM very bad in those science subj. n my +m3. i ever get “0” for the 1st test when i was in form 4, now im form 5. some 1, please give me some tips!!! SPM is comin’ through!!!

  • tortoise_girl

hahaxx~~i hate counting n all the lame experiment..every physic period i only keep on talking with the fren who is sitting bside me.
    muakaka!!

  • kiks

now i F4 (2007), next year F5.. SPM year.. dead.. i only pass my first monthly, and mid-year physics exam.. da second monthly n end-year failed.. 20++~ dead.. i juz cant figure out how to understand physics.. i can tunderstand anythin gn i hate it.. feel sleepy during physics, bio n chemistry.. add maths not sleepy but cluless.. im so dead now~

  • pall

used to love this subject at the beginning of my form 4 but through time, as it geeting tougher each day i began to dislike it. but, guess what i’m going to be a physics teacher..i wonder what have i got myself into…man…i’m dead!

  • shra

omg ! i never EVER like physics. i so wish the education ministry would announce tht physics is to be cancelled for spm 2008. haha. hopefully :b

  • raf88

the truth is form 5 physics is really easier than form 6 physics.if you read f6 physics book
and compare it to f5 physics,f5 physics is very much easier and this is the same with other science subjects including add math.if you don’t believe me try reading f6 physics, chemistry etc and you will find that form 5 is peanuts.so to spm science students please study hard so that you can enter university no need to go form 6.believe in yourself because those subjects are easy to score.good luck and have a nice day.

  • cikgu_physics

dont say like that la.. physics is not as hard as y’ll think.. i’m physics teacher.. n majority of my students said “physics is susah la cikgu”.. in physics u have to imagine a lot.. so just imagine n use ur brain.. that’s it…

  • danial

ya….I enjoyed in learning all subject in school……….but not all of them I cam master….especially physics and chemstry…….esay talking all science subjects……..

  • sukma boy

ya…I enjoyed learning all subject in school…but when it comes to physic my whole class will be running back except for 3 of us…we will stay wit the teacher n listen to all his ‘CRAB’ notes that he shows to us through his projector…but when it comes to PEKA or AMALI the whole class will b there….but with this type of attitude, most of my classmates including three of us got A2 for physics…:-)

  • dudeWHO'sCRAZY

    ive been trying so hard…
ive been studying my physics like a bitch.
but ive only got 47% in my trials!

    SHIIIIIT!

anyway to improve in this subject people??

  • SPM candidates

i hate physic. chemistry, add math and biology are much more easier than physics. grrr. i never got A for physic =.=

  • ABCD

Ppl, plz understand that spm physics is a lot easier( a lot, a lot, a lot) than stpm physics….But if u r a damn good student in physics,Ur friends n ur teachers will respect u coz physics is sumthing special compared 2 bio and chemistry…..Even if u sit, it deals with physics….So ppl lets b practical and start lovin physics
