Here are some old TV advertisement clichés that were over-used when I was a kid. Heck, they could still be used today, I seldom watch local terrestrial TV anymore.
Man in white lab coat entering people house and giving laundry tips to housewives.
Toothpaste products that feature a giant-sized plastic tooth and a man with pointing stick explaining how fluoride and tooth decay work.
Athletes running in super-s-l-o-w motion (and sweating buckets) and quenching their thirst with some isotonic drink they’re advertising.
Health drink ad where this boy smashes a badminton shuttlecock at tips over the net, to which the crowd jumps up in ecstacy.
Multi million ringgit cigarette ads that show expensive fountain pens, cars, men in suits smiling mid-conversation, etc. Or they show beautiful Malaysians posing in some cold European high country scene. But no ciggies.
Women’s shampoo ads that portray split ends like dead tree branches. Like, its only split ends, people, it’s not the end of the world!
Grimy floors suddenly sparkling and shining with stars like its bloody Disneyland after one coat of the wonder-floor cleanser.
Glowing Roman / Trojan soldiers appearing from the sky giving soap powder to old makciks in the kampong.
Public blindfold taste-test for Coca Cola / Pepsi Cola. (Man, this was waa-aay back…)
Any product that is always compared with the shitty ‘Brand X’ (diapers, soft drinks, washing detergents, etc)

Come to think of it, those old ads still make sense. Not like the current one. Use a certain 2B pencil and become some smart ass students. Even my 8 yrs old can say, “What stupid advertisement. Think people use their stupid pencil can suddenly become clever one meh? Stupiak…”
And as for the men/romen that comes out of nowhere, it has gotten worse. The man actually went into the toilet to clean the shit. *haih*

I mean, why need to advertise when everytime exam comes, the students will automatically buy Staedtler (dunno how u spell lah) to use during exam. It’s like, Staedtler = the only 2B pencil in the world like dat. Ahahahah

lilian – yeah sometimes they clean toilet, sometimes they mop floors, and the housewives will be grinning like advertising for Colgate.
s-kay – speaking of staedtler pencils, remember that ad “Kilometrico, tulis beribu perkataan… Kilometrico!” and the smiling pens will be drawing lines for miles…

You guys remember the chocolate ball with the name Ding Dong (featuring Doraemon on the box)? It was a really lame ads that I fell for when I was a kid. The ads show few kids open up the box of Ding Dong and happily(fake) pull out the toy and playing.

hahaha those reminds me of my childhood days in indonesia watching malaysian channels (yes we got tv1, tv2, and tv3 back then). kinda like the taste of malaysia before actually going to the country.
btw if you’ve seen indonesian tv ads, you’ll realize that they’re very flashy and use amazing effects. but the ideas are always s.t.u.p.i.d

mudslinger – i used to watch indon private tv in JB. all i remember was the news always pronounced ‘Japan’ as ‘Jipang’.
sashi – and i remember ‘Jangan Ketawa’s parody on that ad. It showed these normal Malaysian guys and the tag line was “Chee Gah Ya, Muthu, Keunggulan…”
fashionasia – another variation is the guy in white lab coat tries to remove the lipstick and curry stain in a high tech lab… and the housewife will be like “Wow…. fantastic!!!”
lee wye jon – yeah! those indon miniseries that come on in the afternoon on rtm always feature good looking actresses like they’re from HK. My friend once asked his maid how come those girls never work as maids in Malaysia…

mudslinger – watching the ads you’d think the toys were some fantastic RC gizmos. But the actual fact is that its always some pathetic plastic thing. No wonder schools banned this stuff.
s-kay – everyday on the 5-6pm slot there will be dozens of these ads! Choki, Nini biscuit stix with chocolate cream (it was so disgusting i never tried it…)

sending out subtle messages that if you eat this snack, you become as dumb as these kids in the ad?
the more intelligent-looking kids always do ads for biscuits, health foods, etc…
